Mimicry

Mimicry

Please join us for drinks and nibbles on Saturday 13th June at 2.30pm as we celebrate the opening of Mimicry by Jessie Yvette Journoud-Ryan and Katherine Reynolds (Katkar Art and Craft) at Burrinja.

Mimicry runs from the 12th June until the 12th July.
Jessie and Katherine will be in Studio 4 on June 27 and 28 to meet and show visitors how they work.

Mimicry began as an explorative collaboration between two artists of the art of mimicry, imitation and camouflage.
These concepts opened up a myriad of potential subject matters and media allowing the artists to explore a variety of techniques and materials. Through patterns, repetition and colour, anything and everything can be disguised. This collaboration is a visual exploration of the ways mimicry and camouflage can be conveyed in art.

Jessie Yvette Journoud-Ryan’s investigative response to the notion of mimicry starts with an experimental approach via the medium of sculptural mosaics to explore tensions of the art of disguise. Using recycled objects to create an entirely ‘other’ subject matter – not dissimilar to mimicry - is her focus.

Katherine Reynolds’ exploration of the concept of mimicry stems from an interest in animals and the qualities they possess which make them unique. Primarily through the medium of paint, she explores the variety of ways in which something can be camouflaged within its environment.

YouthArt

Art at Linden Gate feels strongly that the next generation of artists should be nurtured and encouraged.   In February 2014 artists local youth participated in the first, free YouthArt exhibition.   Photographs, drawings, paintings, pastels,  linoprints (all framed), sculpture, and ceramics were included with several works selling to the public.

Art at Linden Gate provides the gallery and all associated costs for a 6 week exhibition as well as organising the Launch afternoon, artist mentoring and arrange media interviews with one of the artists.

The young artists have a positive experience of exhibiting their work in a commercial setting which is still in a familiar environment.  This year they will be expected to assist in manning the gallery and can also help with organising the launch event which gives them valuable experience which can be added to their resume.

The Launch afternoon on Sunday 19 April from 1-5 pm will include local young musicians, refreshments and will be opened by Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Maria McCarthy at 3 pm.   All welcome, free entry and art is for sale.
